A server is a device with a special set of programs or protocols that provide several services. Together, a server, including its clients, form a client/server network, giving routing systems and centralized entrance to information, resources, stored data, etc.




What is a blade server?

A blade server is a stripped-down server machine with a modular design optimized to lessen physical space and energy use. Blade servers hold many components transferred to save space, minimize power consumption, and other considerations while still having all the functional components considered a computer. Its central structure is a large mainframe with several "Blade," each of which "blade" is really a system motherboard. It is a HAHD (High Availability High Density) low-cost server platform created specifically for special applications and high-density computing environments.

Advantages of blade server

A standard server-rack configuration, 1U— or one rack unit 19 inches (480 mm) wide and 1.75 inches (44 mm) tall, defines any equipment's minimum possible size. The principal advantage and justification of blade computing relate to lifting this restriction to decrease size requirements. The common computer rack form-factor is 42U high, limiting the number of discrete computer devices directly mountable in a rack to 42 components. Blades do not have this limitation. As of 2014, densities of upto 180 servers per blade system (or 1440 servers per rack) are achievable with blade systems.


Enclosure (or chassis) offers many of the non-core computing services found in most computers. Non-blade systems typically use hot, bulky, and space-inefficient components and might duplicate them beyond many computers that may not perform at capacity. The overall utilization becomes higher by locating these services in one place and sharing them among the blade computers.
